Lifesaver for Water Activities
An event requiring a lifesaver must have a Primary Lifesaver who is a responsible adult.
The Primary Lifesaver may be assisted by a Secondary Lifesaver, who is a minimum of 14 years of age.
A Secondary Lifesaver is to work under the supervision of the Primary Lifesaver, and is not to be the sole or primary lifesaver.
No Lifesaver is to participate in swimming activities whilst on duty.
Any Lifesaver is to hold the required qualifications as follows:
- Surfing beaches Royal Life Saving Society Australia Patrol Lifeguard OR
- Surf Life Saving Australia Limited lifesaver on duty OR equivalent.
Sea, rivers and other open water
Royal Life Saving Society Australia Patrol Lifeguard OR Surf Life Saving Australia Limited Bronze Medallion or higher award OR equivalent.
Still water or not fast-flowing
If water is over 80 cm: Royal Life Saving Society Australia Bronze Medallion or equivalent. If less than 80 cm: Royal Life Saving Society Australia Resuscitation Award or equivalent.
Public Swimming Pools
Royal Life Saving Society Australia Bronze Medallion or higher award (or equivalent). The official lifesaver at the pool is acceptable.
Private Swimming Pools
Royal Life Saving Society Australia Dry Rescue or higher award (or equivalent) AND either Royal Life Saving Society Australia Resuscitation Award OR know how to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), have had instruction under qualified supervision on a manikin and shown practical proficiency. Competency in CPR must be demonstrated in accordance with State legislation. Reassessment of qualifications must be in accordance with the requirements of Royal Life Saving Society Australia or Surf Life Saving Australia Limited or equivalent.
